User Segmentation in Olvy

User segmentation is the process of dividing a user base into distinct groups based on common characteristics. This technique helps businesses and product teams better understand their users, tailor their messaging and experiences to different user groups, and ultimately improve user engagement and retention.

With Olvy's user segmentation feature, you can easily create segments based on various user properties such as name, email, country, operating system, device, and more. These segments can be used to target specific user groups with product releases, and can also be used to filter feedback based on the characteristics of the users who provided it.

User segmenation on Olvy allows to create segments of your users based on the following properties.

How it Works

Let's say you want to publish a release for only your team members, which shouldn't be visible or accessible to the public. You may also want to organise feedback you receive from your team members separately.

In this example, since we want to segment people who work at a company we can use their email address to build a rule. Everybody to works at Olvy will have their email end with olvy.co which we can use to build our segment.

To do it, let's go to segments in the Users page, and click on Create Segment.

You will be taken to the Segment builder, which will look like this.

Here you can build rules on the left hand side, and preview existing users who match your segment.

When new users get created they are automatically added to a segment.

In the above example, we've built a rule for all users whose email ends with olvy.co.

Once you have the rules set up and you are satified with your rules, click on Create Segment and your segment will be created.

Using Segments in Changelog

When you're publishing a new release you can select the segment you want to publish the release note to. It can configured in the publishing confirmation step where you can already set a publish or expiration date for a release.

You will also need to enable user identification in your widgets so Olvy can know who is the user trying to view your releases and only show them the releases they are allowed to see based on the segments.

You can learn more about setting up user identification here

Using Segments in Feedback

Olvy automatically refreshes your users and stores the segment they should be a part of with their profile so you can filter your feedback based on these segments.

This automatic refresh currently happens every 1 hour, so if you've just created a segment it might take a little while for you to be able to filter your feedback based on your created segments.

The segment filter be available with all other filters in the Feedback page of your Olvy workspace.
